Perfecting Your Basic Boxing Stance

When you are learning how to box you should first focus on your footwork. Many people overlook their footwork and think that this will just come natural when they step out into the ring to face a competitor.

You should be sure that you understand what a basic stance is for boxing. When you are learning how to box you have to make sure that you are taking the time to perfect your stance so that it will come natural to you while you are in the ring.

First, you should make sure that you are sideways to your target. Your shoulder that is facing the opponent should be the opposite shoulder of your strong punching hand so that you are able to get a lot of power behind your strong hand.

This means that if you are planning on boxing left-handed you will want to be sure that your right shoulder is facing the boxer you are facing. Although this may seem unnatural, you have to make sure that you follow this rule.

When you are standing you should also make sure that your feet are not too wide and too close. They should be about shoulder width apart and you want to make sure that you have one foot that is ahead of the other.


If you are boxing with your left hand your right foot should be just a small step forward. The more that you understand about this stance the easier it will be to be able to accomplish the hits that you want to throughout your match.

The heel of your lead foot needs to be in line with the toe of your other foot. You want to make sure that you are taking the time to practice this enough that you do not have to look down as you are setting up your stance.

After your feet are this far they should be turned at a forty five degree angle to who you want to hit. When you have your feet positioned you also have to make sure that you understand that your stance is much more than just your feet.

Your knees should be bent slightly and you want to make sure that your hips are loose. Although you want to keep your knees and hips loose and bent you want to make sure that your back is fairly straight.

There are not a lot of people that understand how to combine these two aspects of their stance. While you are working to combine the two aspects you have to take the time to keep at it until it feels like a natural way to stand.


When you are able to stand like this naturally you should then work on lifting your back heel off of the ground. It should not be more than three inches off of the ground and you want to make sure that you are completely balanced throughout the process.

If someone should come and push you, you should not falter or move when you are in your basic stance.
