When considering playing lacrosse some people get discouraged because of all the equipment that is required. When you first learn to play lacrosse you should start out slow and primarily focus on the basics.

The first skills you will learn are how to run with the ball in your stick and how to throw it when the time comes. Throwing a lacrosse ball strongly and accurately requires a specific motion that will take time to perfect.

As you practice and play lacrosse more often it will become extremely easy to throw the ball and it won’t even require you to think about it. You will be able to run, dodge, and jump all while holding the ball and throwing it at a designated target.

A lot of people like to take time practicing throwing the ball back and forth to a friend before they step onto the lacrosse field and attempt to play a true game. As time goes on you will have more practice and your throwing accuracy and velocity will increase dramatically.

First, you will learn to fully control the ball while moving around the field. You will need to learn how to cradle the ball in the back side of the net in your lacrosse stick; this is the ideal location to have the most control.

When you have the ball resting in the proper spot in the netting it makes it much easier to have full control and direct the ball in the right trajectory when you throw it. Understanding the right way to hold the ball as run on the field is important so you can throw the ball at the exact moment necessary.

Second, you need to learn how to maneuver your body at the right times. It is important to step in the direction of your target when you throw the ball to transfer your momentum forward and give added control and velocity.

When you throw the ball towards the goal you should use your body weight and momentum to launch the ball as quickly as possible. When you are throwing it to a team mate it may be necessary to be more concerned with accuracy rather than velocity. As you throw the ball the hand that is on top of the stick will help guide it in the right direction.

The lacrosse stick will snap forward as your top hand and wrist fling forward. If you are right handed then your top hand should be your right hand, and if you are left handed your left hand should be on top.

It is critical to take the time to practice your throwing motion over and over again. It is a good idea to stick with our dominant hand on top of the stick because it will provide you with more coordination and overall extra strength and agility with a lacrosse stick.

When you are in the motion of throwing the ball it is important that you don’t stop running or moving. When you are in a real lacrosse game, most of your throws will be on the move so it is important to practice throwing while running, jumping, or even rolling.

You will finish the throwing motion when the stick becomes parallel with the ground. This ensures that all of your momentum is transferred forward when you throw the ball.

With the right mindset and proper dedication you can increase your skills at lacrosse in no time at all. Lacrosse can be a fun way to stay active and help maintain an active lifestyle.
